How to Remove Line Breaks from a PDF or Word File (Upload)
Copying text out of a long PDF or Word file is slow, and the pasted text is full of broken lines. Our tool can now open the file directly. Upload it, remove the line breaks and download clean text in a few seconds.
How to remove line breaks from a file
- Open the Remove Line Breaks tool.
- Click Upload file above the text box, or drag your file onto the box.
- Choose a mode. For PDF and Word files, Fix PDF text or Keep paragraphs usually gives the best result.
- Click Download to save the result as
yourfile-clean.txt, or Copy it.
Supported file types
- PDF (.pdf): any PDF with selectable text
- Word (.docx) and OpenDocument (.odt)
- Rich text (.rtf)
- Plain text (.txt, .md, .log), CSV and TSV lists
- Web pages (.html) and data files (.json, .xml)
- Subtitles (.srt, .vtt). For these, use the Transcript Cleaner.
Files up to 25 MB are supported. Old Word files (.doc) need to be saved as .docx first: open them in Word and choose File, Save As, Word Document.
Which mode should I choose?
- Remove line breaks: puts all the text on one line. Good for short text, form fields and lists.
- Keep paragraphs: joins broken lines but keeps the empty line between paragraphs. Best for articles and reports.
- Fix PDF text: like Keep paragraphs, and also fixes words split with a hyphen at the end of a line, such as infor- mation.
- Join lines: turns a CSV column or list into one line with a comma or any separator.
Is it safe to upload my file?
Yes. The word "upload" here only means you choose the file. It is opened and processed inside your own browser. Nothing is sent to our server or stored anywhere, so you can safely clean contracts, reports and other private documents.
Why is my PDF empty or unreadable?
Some PDFs are scanned images. They look like text, but there is no real text inside, so nothing can be extracted. In that case use an OCR tool first (for example, open the PDF in Google Drive with Google Docs), then paste the result here. Also read our guides for Word and Excel.

Does it keep the formatting of my Word file?
